The GDR Museum is a museum on the banks of the Spree in Berlin Mitte that deals with the former German Democratic Republic. It is one of the most visited museums in Berlin.

The GDR Museum deals primarily with everyday life in the GDR. Consumer goods, food, furniture, clothing and the famous GDR Volksauto Trabant, for example, are on display. The exhibition also deals with sensitive topics such as the Stasi and political persecution. Whether you come from the East or the West, young or old, the GDR Museum is certainly one of the most interesting museums in the German capital Berlin.

Directions to the DDR Museum: The tourist bus lines 100 and 200 of the Berlin public transport stop less than 100 metres away (bus stop Lustgarten). The nearest underground station is Alexanderplatz (500 metres), the nearest S-Bahn station is Hackesche Markt (S5, S7 and S75, 300 metres). The museum is located directly on the river Spree.

What can be seen in the GDR Museum Berlin ?

On the one hand there are many products from the former GDR. On the one hand there is furniture, on the other hand the cupboard walls of the GDR brand Karat can be opened. There are also many things from a GDR supermarket. Also objects to topics like fashion, vacation, music and much more are shown.

Especially interesting is the Trabant car and the Trabant simulator. You drive with the typical Trabi sound through a skyscraper settlement.

There is also an originally furnished GDR apartment. One gets an insight into the life of a normal GDR family.

There is also an exhibition about the government and the Stasi, one sees a prison (cell), a room for interrogations. Everything, also the furniture, typewriter etc. is real. You can also eat in the GDR museum, of course the real GDR cuisine of the 70s and 80s.

Who wants can also dance Lipsi, a dance from the GDR (fashion dance of the 60s).

Our conclusion: Super museum, very interesting for every German or other person, whether from East or West. Young people who haven’t experienced the GDR before especially like the exhibition in the GDR Museum in Berlin. Good museum, not too big, but entrance fee less than 10 Euro (in 2020).

Near the GDR Museum: The Nikolaiviertel can be reached on foot in a few minutes. The famous Red Town Hall is also nearby. Opposite is the Berlin Cathedral. It is not too far to the central Alexanderplatz. Very close is also Berlin Castle, which is currently being extensively rebuilt. Next to the GDR Museum is the Aquarium Sea Life Berlin. The famous Museum Island Berlin on the other side of the Spree is about 300 meters away.
