The KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) in Berlin is the largest and best-known department store in Germany. This huge store sells mainly upmarket products (luxury goods). It is estimated that 50 % of the goods in the KaDeWe are clothing, but the upper two floors are also very popular among Berliners and tourists. On the 6th and 7th floor food is sold and there are some high-quality restaurants and cafes.

Directions to KaDeWe: The Kaufhaus des Westens is located in Tauentzienstraße in the Berlin-Schöneberg district. Tauentzienstraße is the extension of the famous Kurfürstendamm, which begins about 200 meters further west at the Gedächtniskirche (church).

The underground station near the KaDeWe is called Wittenbergplatz (U1, U2 and U3). The famous Hard Rock Cafe branch is also nearby.

The largest department store on the European continent (excluding Great Britain) offers several 100,000 products. The sales area is about 60,000 m², the number of employees is according to information on the Internet about 2000. The department store of the West consists of 8 floors, the ground floor and the floors 1 to 7.

The many thousands of customers per day use the many escalators to get to the upper floors.

On the ground floor, luxury and beauty products are offered. These include perfume, high-quality wristwatches, jewellery and much more.

On the first floor of the KaDeWe is the fashion department for men, on the second floor clothing for women.

Products for children and women’s shoes are sold on the 3rd floor.

On the 4th floor there are goods for the home and toys.

On the 5th floor you can buy electronics, books, kitchen goods and suitcases, for example.

The 6th floor is very popular. Here there is mainly food. It is one of the largest delicatessen departments in Europe. The departments for wine and spirits, for example, are well known. We liked the many varieties of cheese and the many exotic fruits and vegetables. There are said to be more than 1000 sorts of sausage and cheese each. The many sweets are also great. There are also some smaller restaurants and cafes on the 6th floor of the KaDeWe in Berlin.

On the 7th floor of the Kaufhaus des Westens in a large, high-quality restaurant called Wintergarten. You have a great view from the big windows.

The KaDeWe is over 110 years old, opened in 1907. In 1943 the department store burned down after the crash of an American plane during a bombing raid. In Berlin, the department store has become a symbol of consumption and market economy. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many hundreds of thousands of GDR citizens went to the KaDeWe. The largest department store in Germany offers above all high-quality, fine and noble goods, it is not a bargain shop. The prices are rather high in all areas, including food and restaurants.

A striking number of KaDeWe customers come from abroad. It is the shopping address in Berlin, especially for luxury products. This attracts rich people from China, Russia or the Middle East, for example.

Mon, Tue, Wed and Thu 10 o’clock to 20 o’clock.

Friday 10 to 21 o’clock

Saturday 9:30 to 20 o’clock

Sunday the department store of the west is open from 13 o’clock to 18 o’clock. On most holidays it is closed.
