Britz Garden

The Britzer Garten is a large city park in the south of Berlin. It was built in the early 1980s for the 1985 Federal Garden Show, which was held in the Britzer Garten. It is one of the most beautiful city parks in Berlin. In our opinion, the Brinzer Garten is very clean and looks more well-kept than any other city park in Berlin. The Britzer Park costs admission, but not more than 3 euros per person.

The size of Britzer Park is almost one square kilometre. In the middle is a large lake that takes up about 10% of the park’s area. Many footpaths run through the large park in the Berlin-Britz district.

The 4 most popular tickets for Berlin for 2024

1. TV Tower ticket: At Corona times, you can only go up to the highest building in Germany only by reservation (online tickets). At other times very often long waiting times without reservation: Link to the Tickets

2. Boat tour on the river Spree passing great sights (1 hour):  Link to the Tickets

3. Hitler-Bunker and Story-Museum: One of the most popular attractions in Berlin. Made a strong impression on us: Link to the Tickets

4. Ticket Illuseum Berlin: Great, modern museum about optical illusions, currently a hit in Berlin: Link to the Tickets

Many Berliners come to the Britzer Garten to soak up the sun on one of the many sunbathing lawns. Picnics in the park are also very popular.

The large restaurant in the public garden is the “Britzer Seeterrassen”. The quality is right, but the prices are not exactly low. Schnitzel with fries around 15 euros, currywurst with fries around 9 euros in spring 2020. Other places in the Britzer Garten also serve fast food like bratwurst (3 euros). Several public toilets are clean and free of charge.

Great in Britzer Park are the chic gardens like the Rose Garden. In the Witches’ Garden, you can see medicinal plants from the Middle Ages, among other things.

A park railway runs through the garden, but it is out of service (as of April 2020). The rails were deformed during the summer heat. There is also mini-golf and a reading café in the park.

In our opinion, every fan of parks should definitely visit Britzer Park. It is one of the largest, most beautiful and cleanest parks in Berlin. Due to its enormous size, you can find a quiet spot even in summer. We like to sit by the lake opposite an island. You can’t enter the Liebesinsel, it’s a retreat for animals.

On the small viewing hill you have a good view over large parts of the Britzer Garten and over the lake. We also liked the streams and springs in the park. There are playgrounds for children, including a water playground. Another playground that is very popular with children is the Makunaima clay village. There are also animals in the Britzer Garten, an enclosure with sheep, but also donkeys, chickens and rabbits. Another sight in the garden is Britzer Mühle, a functioning grain mill.

Admission Britzer Garten

Along with the Gärten der Welt park in eastern Berlin, Britzer Park is one of the few city parks that charges admission. However, the entrance fees are not very high. Adults pay an entrance fee of 3 euros in summer and 2 euros in winter. Children from the age of 6 (smaller children free of charge) and the disabled cost half.

Bicycles and the like as well as dogs are prohibited in the Britzer Garten!

Opening hours Britzer Garten

Daily from 9 a.m. until around dusk (in winter until 4 p.m., in summer until 8 p.m., depending on the month).

How to get to the Britzer Garten

The park is outside the city centre in the south of Berlin. There are several entrances with ticket offices. There are parking spaces at the entrances, but on days with many visitors they are insufficient. It is better to come by public transport.

We tried two options: Take the U6 underground to the Alt-Mariendorf terminus and then continue by bus 181 to the Rotkopfweg stop (leaves every 10 minutes during the day). Take the U-Bahn or S-Bahn to the Hermannstraße stop and then continue with the M44 bus to “Britzer Garten” (leaves every 5 minutes).

The Britzer Garten has received several awards, also for sustainability.
