There are many providers of boat tours in Berlin. In summer you can see a bigger ship with tourists almost every 100 metres on the Spree in the city centre of Berlin. The offers are often relatively similar with different companies. Nevertheless, there are better and worse boat tours.
An old, well-known and good provider is the Stern und Kreisschiffahrt GmbH Berlin, which took over the ship lines of the Weiße Flotte Berlin of the BVG (Berlin Public Transport) almost 30 years ago. The departures are punctual, the staff are friendly, the service on board is good. The explanations of the buildings and bridges through loudspeakers are easy to understand and the content is very good. Stern und Kreisschiffahrt has over 30 passenger ships.
The best-selling Stern und Kreisschiffahrt boat tour is the 1-hour “Historic City Tour” on the Spree in Berlin-Mitte. This boat tour is the content of this article.

Itinerary of the tour “Historic City Tour Berlin
The most popular tour with several departures per hour of the Berliner Stern und Kreisschiffahrt is the short tour (1 hour) on the Spree through the city centre of Berlin “Historische Stadtrundfahrt”. You start in the Nikolai Quarter or on Friedrichstraße and pass the Museum Island, the Berlin Cathedral, the new main railway station, the Reichstag and the Federal Chancellery. After about 30 minutes, the ship turns around and you go back again.
All important buildings on the riverbank are explained in German by loudspeakers on board. You can also choose an audio guide if you prefer to hear the explanations in another language. As a passenger, you can either sit upstairs outside on the roof of the boat or downstairs inside. There are clean toilets on the boats. You can also order drinks, coffee and cake, small snacks, etc.

Sitting outside on the roof, you pass under many bridges over the river Spree only a short distance away. Sometimes you get the feeling that you could touch the bridges with your hands over your head, which of course you shouldn’t do. Some of the bridges over the Spree are very famous. One Spree Bridge was built just for the Chancellor so that he (or for a long time, of course, she) could get to the helicopter landing site opposite the Chancellery.

When and where are the departures?
The boats on the “Historic City Tour” route depart every half hour between 10:30 and 17:30 in summer. There are 2 departure points (piers) that are not too far apart. One is (our recommendation) on the Spree almost in the Nikolaiviertel next to the Karl-Liebknecht-Brücke (address: Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 1A, 10178 Berlin). The other is near Friedrichstraße.
